death toll
It is hard to determine the exact amount of people who died during the famine since records of death and birth were not complete. It is believed that more people died of disease then starvation. A census record in 1851 shows that the population of Ireland was 6,552,385. In 1841 the population of Ireland was between 8-9 million, a about 1 million people believed to have died during the ten year span. It is still very unsure the exact mortality rate during the famine is it believed that about 20,000 died of disease and a little below then 1 million from disease.
