Causes
In 1801, Ireland was governed by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and the Chief Secretary of Ireland. These men were appointed by the United Kingdom. During the early 1800s, many British nobleman were convinced Ireland was heading for economic disaster, due to the rapid rise in population. Many commissions and committees had enquired to Ireland that they prophesied disaster for Ireland because Ireland was on the verge of starvation due to the rapid population growth, housing and sanitation in Irish communities were appalling, and three-quarters of Ireland's laborers were unemployed.
Effects
The Irish people were determined to find a source of the famine. Many people blamed the government sparking revolutions in Ireland during the famine. The Young Ireland rebellion under Thomas Davis blamed the government for Ireland's hardships.
The largest impact the Irish Potato Famine had was the mass migration of Irish people. During the Famine, thousands of Irish emigrated to the United States in hope to find a new life. Many of these immigrants started associating with Irish freedom and liberation groups. Many of these groups blamed the United Kingdom for their slow reaction to the catastrophe. Many of these people were more determined for Irish freedom then their counterparts back home.
